Harris Tweed Sofa

Chesterfield Leather Sofas can help you make your 'Harris Tweed' couch or chair a reality. This fabric is available in various colours and may be used with any of our furniture models. For example, Harris Tweed Chesterfield sofas and Harris Tweed wingback chairs may all be made.

Harris Tweed, a 100% wool cloth produced in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, with a characteristic fleck pattern. The name is so esteemed that an Act of Parliament protects it. '

'Harris Tweed' is an excellent option for a traditional couch or chair because of its longevity, attractiveness, and comfort.

Wool from Cheviot and Scottish Blackface sheep is used to make Harris Tweed. Island communities still assemble in early summer to shear their own sheep to contribute to the mix, despite the fact that most of the wool comes from the mainland. These two varieties of wool are combined in order to make use of each other's distinct benefits and features.

A huge bag of tweed wool is then supplied to the major tweed makers' facilities, where it is subsequently dyed in a wide variety of colours for the purpose of blends.

Weigh the newly dyed coloured and white wool in predefined quantities and then fully mix by hand using a unique method to get the desired hue. A series of mechanical serrated rollers are used to extensively tangle and intermix the fibres before they are separated into a frangible, embryonic thread. It is then spun with a twist so that it may be used for weaving. Weft and warp materials are provided to the weavers in the form of bobbins of spun yarn that is coiled on the bobbins.

This all-important process sees thousands of warp threads gathered in long chops in a very specific order and wound onto large beams ready to be delivered, along with weft yarn, to the weavers.

A pedal loom at home is used to weave all Harris Tweeds; each weaver has a double-width Bonas-Griffith rapier loom at a mill weaver or an older single-width Hattersley loom for independent weavers. After the weaver has 'connected' the warp threads bypassing each end through the loom's eyes, they will begin weaving and mend any defects or breaks that arise along the way.

The tweed is then sent back to the mill in its "greasy condition," where it is corrected by darners.

The Harris Tweed Authority, an independent organisation, now conducts weekly inspections of the facilities where the fabric is made before stamping the cloth with the Orb Mark logo as a guarantee of its authenticity.
